Painting Storage Rack
In this video I build a painting storage rack for an artist family member, Austin Cotes. The rack was commissioned by his wife as a surprise. The video was shot in a way to not reveal what I’m making till the end, so that the video could be used to reveal the surprise.
The quote on the front plaque is “Where I create, there I am true.” which is attributed to Rainer Maria Rilke.
There are several Easter eggs throughout the video. The below chapter times will take you to each one.
- 00:00 - Start
- 00:12 - Quote on the box flap on the right, “The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery” - Francis Bacon
- 00:27 - Quote on the toolbox, ‘Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” - Pablo Picasso
- 01:36 - Quote on the aluminum block (may be cutoff on some screens), “I paint not the things I see but the feelings they evoke in me” - Odilon Redon
- 05:17 - “Hi Austin” on the yellow parts bin.
- 05:48 - Paint brushes on the bench.
- 06:38 - The stenciled assembly labels spell “Austin.”
- 08:11 - Sticker in the upper left says “Austin.”
- 08:18 - Space helmet was just a gag.
- 08:36 - Easel made of toothpicks on the upper right.
- 14:23 - Using a painter’s palette.
- 14:51 - Third hand over from the left is Austin’s wife Lindsey. And the remainder of the video takes place in Austin’s studio.
