07/2008 - Simplified Building:
After reaching out to them to ask for a discount code and noting I’d be documenting the “Zero Point Shelf” project on my site, they provided me with a 10% discount code.
04/2012 - Architectural Mailboxes:
After posting about how easily it was to compromise one of their mailboxes the CEO reached out to explain the issue and informed me that it had since been addressed. I asked her to send a video demonstrating that a hand could no longer fit completely inside the mailbox. I also offered to test the updated mailbox myself if they were willing to send me one, with the intention of returning it after testing.
The CEO asked for my color preference and told me I could keep the mailbox after I was done. This was before I had developed (or even seriously considered) my current policies around receiving free products. At the time, I thought, “This is what YouTubers do…” so I accepted.
Today, I would neither request a product nor accept one offered for review or testing. The upside is that the first video, demonstrating the flaw, remains untainted by influence, while the second video—showing the updated mailbox—is.
That said, I stand by my assessment: the updated mailbox does not suffer from the same flaw as the original.
08/2024 - Solarcan:
I purchased the standard Solarcan camera with my own money on a whim when ordering some other stuff from B&H. After using it to take a year long exposure, I posted about it on TikTok and that video went semi-viral. The owner of Solarcan then sent me one of their Solarcan PUCKS as a thank you (they had noticed an uptick in orders from my video).
09/2024 - Raspberry Shake:
I purchased my Raspberry Shake 1D back in 2022 with my own money. In 2023, after posting about my DIY waterproof enclosure in the raspberryshake.org forums, I was contacted by their marketing director and asked if I’d like to write a post about the enclosure for their blog. That led to a discussion about writing a blog post about the enclosure and the seismic vault that I built for my Raspberry Shake.
